That Other Life

Janice sat up, gasping.
Looking for threats, as always.
She was in a clean, white bedroom - clearly furnished for a couple.
Ok….
Not the first time.  Occasionally, for blow, meth, or ANYTHING, she had been the third party at a kink-fest....
Not today.
Today she felt...clean.
  Literally.
No aching head, no pounding heart, no cement-caked sinuses or glass-filled lungs.
Her head was clean.
Why?
Why was today different?

"Mom!" A boyish voice -not cracked, but husky- called.
A knock, and the door burst open
It was Shawn...her baby.  Last seen at the age of 5, crying as the police car rolled away; reaching for her and screaming, “Mama!”
She would know those Arctic Blue-grey tinged with periwinkle- eyes anywhere.
"Mom, you gotta sign this permission slip for the Gorge!"
She sat back and held out her (unshaking) hand for the paper – ready to sign anything to keep looking at her grown boy.  Her son.
The lump next to her stirred; turned over.
Colin? Husband? (Ex)
The man who restrained her crying babies as the police dragged her off?
The man who killed her Happily Ever After when he caught her?
Pills. Drugs.
Colin who consigned her to days and nights of Sex, Drugs, and Flophouses, when he cast her out?
She turned; ready to scratch his eyes out….
Adelaide walked in, flipping her caramel hair over her shoulder.
"Ew. Get a room, guys, or just get up. Feed me!"
Huffed out – flipping that hair again.
Addie, no longer a 7 year-old cherub, but a gorgeous long-limbed woman.

What WAS this?
A second chance?  A crank-led delusion?
What?
Over the next few weeks, she settled in.
Making pancakes, checking homework.
Momming.
But there were DREAMS.

The last 10 years of drugs, degradation, and desperation were a bad dream.
Right?
But she kept having them, no matter how obvious it was, there was no truth to them.

No spiral into addiction after copping Shawn's Ritalin to cope with 50 hours a week at work, two kids, and a husband that spent too much time with The Blazers.

No blowjobs and begging.  No achingly pathetic life, wondering about those babies.
Just this.  Other Life.  Clean, shining, right.

Just this life.

Except for the DREAMS.

Of that life.
Waking up from those dreams, she needed a few shots of vodka.
Waking up from the dreams, she needed a handful of pills.
Waking up from the dreams, she needed to smoke a rock.

Waking up from the dreams, her beautiful babies were miraculous people, and her life was sane.
Clean.
Whole.
For Colin and Shawn and Addie, she stayed clean.  Whole.

One Saturday, as she was cleaning Shawn and Addie's bathroom, she saw it.
White cap, orange bottle.
OxyContin
Seduction in a bottle.  Salvation in a pill.  Spoliation in the palm of her hand.
On Wednesday, she opened the bottle.

On Thursday, she palmed two.

In case.

In case the dreams were too much.
In case…..
In case this life was too much.

In case.

Day Whatever - Things You Want To Say To 5 Different People

Things You Want To Say To 5 Different People

This could be fun......the possibilities for a full-on bitchfest are eeeeeennnddlleeesssssssssss!

However, I am trying to keep my words and deeds a little less snarky and a lot more sappy this year, ok?

Wait....that can't be right?

So, here are the 5 lucky people, ALL of whom I am going to use aliases for, so as not to share their biz-nazzz all over the interwebs.

#1.  ELJ.
This is hard....what do you say to someone that you think is the most special, amazing, awesome person on the planet?  Every time I look at you, I think "You. Are. Here."  And how amazing is that?  You overcame so many obstacles from the minute you took your first shaky breath on lungs that barely worked.  You came.  You saw. And you are kicking ass at life.  What more can any person ask for in someone they love to the point of insanity?  As I watch you on your journey, I am struck with wonder at all that you are.  You have created yourself from yourself.  I have watched your parents bumble, fumble, and utterly screw up at parenting you, yet you have turned into the most marvelous, amazing, joyful, cynical, hilarious, adventurous soul I have ever had the good fortune to meet.

Always

You should know that I think about you when I am falling asleep, sending you loving thoughts and peaceful vibes to have good dreams that make you rested and fulfilled when you wake up.  I think about you when I wake up, and wish you safe days full of adventure, knowledge, and fun.  When I am far away from you, I wish on stars that your life will be filled with beautiful experiences and endless love.  Sunsets on the beach, sunrises in the mountains; you are always with me.  Am I the best friend/role model/advice-giver ever?  Nope.  I am probably very low on your list of influential people in your life and heart, and I deserve that.  Just know that most of the steps I take in life, you are walking with me...not holding my hand---totally not your style!---but in the quiet moments, where I have pause to think about how lovely the world is, you are right there with my heart in your hands.  I am not sure what random, magical, purposeful, pre-ordained, unplanned acts of the universe led to me being able to meet you, but here you are.

Yep

You are here, and I am so grateful to be an observer on your journey.

#2. SH.
Yeah, um, how are we even alive?
The best thing about lifelong friends is you can say things to them like this:
"I won your divorce on the radio"
Your Dodge Dart
Posing in the Giant Chair.
26/62
GET ON THE BUS
Ooooops!!! Sorry I walked in on that!

And they will immediately know what you are talking about---even better, they will immediately bust out into the warmest, richest, most hilariously infectious laugh the world has ever heard, because they know the whole damn story from "Once up upon a time..." to "...and they lived interestingly ever after".  Ohhhhh, my dear, how I love you.  Can't even count the ways, because there aren't enough numbers.  When I met you, I was not sure I would like you---mainly because pervy Bob used YOU as an excuse for shaming me  for not hugging him whenever he tried.. But we got through that, didn't we?  We also got through an AMAZING number of goofy men....John, Justin, Todd, Vince, LUDO!! LOUIS, Jim, Jim, Jim, Jim, (did I mention all the Jim's???) and...wait, WHAT was his name??  You and I have come through the fire together, and we STILL LOOK FABULOUS!!!  I love you forever, precious, and I am so glad I had you to lean on (mostly because I was drunk) and that you could lean on me (when I was wearing flats)! xoxox  BFF, baby!

I guess, when someone saves your life, you say "Thank You."  Right?  Well, what exactly do you say to someone that saves your soul?  What do you say to someone that stops you when you are actively slapping layers of concrete on your heart so it can stop breaking all the time, and puts their hands around it, and holds it ever so gently until it begins to heal and beat on its own again?  "Thank You" seems so inadequate....

When I met you, I was a confused, abused, scared angry kid.  You helped me in so many ways, so many different times.  Your irrepressible optimism, your unwavering faith in a better day, and your unquenchable patience and love was the rope I used to climb out of the hole that I started in.   People talk about 'the light at the end of the tunnel' for near-death experiences....have I ever been near death?  Not sure.  I just know that every single time that tunnel got really dark, every time I was in despair and wondering what I was worth, I got a light.  It was YOU, with your great heart, holding the lamp high so I could keep going.

This is you....

You have given so much love to the person I love best in this world, and the fact that you two have such a special, loving friendship eases my heart when I worry about the both of you.  No one knows the many times I have poured my heart out to you, or the  times you have confided in me things I will take to the grave.  I wish the whole world could know what great love you have in your heart and how brightly it shines in mine every single day.  I don't write you or call you (or email, Facebook, Twitter, or text you) as much as your real family does, but that doesn't mean I don't love you, pray for you, wish great things to you, or send you all the love I can as much as I am able.  In my life you have been a role model, a hero, a wise advice-giver, a shoulder to cry on, a friend, a hand up, and a heart that held me close.  So, dear friend, I say this to you:

Danke.
Mahalo.
Arigato.
Merci.
Grazie.
Ahsante.

And, more importantly...

Ich Liebe Dich
Aloha wau ia oi
Aishiteru
Je t`aime
 Ti amo
Ninapenda wewe

This applies to all 4 of you ladies in this blog....but not you, TC...sorry!

#4  TKS
So, I know you read this blog....and I am a tiny bit surprised about it, but not too much.  You and I are as about different as night and day in every way imaginable.  Except the most important way, the best, brightest, and most fabulous way that people can be the same, and that is that our hearts all love unconditionally.

You have a belief system that could cause you to shun, judge, and turn your back on me, yet all I have ever received from you is the unconditional love of one friend to another.  You have been at my side since I was nearly a child, maybe being surprised at finding me in the same place you were, but always accepting me for who I was.  When the universe smashed my heart into a thousand pieces, you offered me your heart and hand in friendship.  I danced at your wedding reception with my husband, and hugged you with joy, even though our married lives were like apples and oranges, and our experiences should have divided us....whenever anyone speaks of religious intolerance I think of you.  Because you epitomize all that is love and tolerance and caring and sharing to everyone you meet---no matter their beliefs.    Loving, "mom-ing", caring, and just being yourself.  You have been my friend for a thousand years, it seems to me (or, ONLY ALMOST 24 YEARS in Lexi-speak!), only because I know every time I see you, it will be as if not one thing has changed, and we are still hugging because we won (GO MINERS!), or hugging because we lost, or hugging because the unimaginable happened, or hugging from joy....always joy with you, dearest  TK(S), always joy.  xoxo

#5 TC
Oh, you....Dear, dear handsome, funny, interesting love of mine.  Yep, I just said it...I love you.  Interesting how that works out, though.  I love you, but that doesn't mean you love me back.  Nor does it mean that the last 7+ years you and I have spent revolving in each others orbits means a damn thing.  The funny thing about you is that I thought I was immune to you and your rather...unique charms.  We tried dating for a bit, and it did not work, for too many reasons to list even though I really thought I wanted it to.  So, I really thought I was okay with our sort of halfway-whatever-you-want-to-call-it-thing.   Then, a few things happened, and I had to wonder if the periodic, fleeting fun we had together was worth me dying a tiny bit every time I realized that what we had was nothing to you.....

I wish.....

The first was, you sent me a message about me not seeing you recently, and you said this "You treated me poorly so we quit seeing each other... not my fault I still have feelings"  And I thought about that...did I really treat you THAT poorly?  I know I used to rub your feet after work, and everyone knows---or should know---how I feel about feet--- but if they know that, then maybe they know how I feel about you.  I know I tried to make you chicken and dumplings because you said you liked it, even though I LOATHE "American-home-cookin", and your only response was to complain about the fact that I used bone-in-meat (Goooooo Southern Living Magazine!), even though I didn't know that....but I also know I pushed you away, prevaricated, was ambivalent, and as unemotional as I could be....so, yes, I probably did treat you badly.  But I didn't mean to, and if I had any idea that my being totally casual would have hurt you (and, you must admit you were a bit unobtainable yourself),  I would have offered you my heart and soul (boneless, of course) on a platter.

If only....

My 2nd favorite blogger in the entire world wrote a post the other day (you can find it here <click!), and even though you weren't the only ex I am friends with, and certainly not the one I preached to her about, I thought about you when I read it.  Until I realized there is no way on the whole world I could ever be just friends with you...because I love you.  So much, that I absolutely had to give you up, since we are clearly not right for each other.  This isn't a Nora Ephron flick, this is my life.  So, seemingly insurmountable differences are just that.  That pains me a lot, you know.  I kind of thought we would exist in this quasi-relationship-type-scenario until one of us got married (not to each other, obviously), and then it would be over.  Then I realized, I have no chance of marrying anyone....even falling in love with someone, until I face up to the fact that you and I are over.  And should be over. Will I love anyone as much as I (think) I loved you?  Maybe not.  Do I wish things had worked out differently between us?  Well, duh!  I will regret you forever.  I won't regret letting you pick up on me---and you know you did!  I won't regret the time we actually dated---although I do regret that you think I treated you 'poorly'.  I won't regret the last 7+ years of ...well, whatever you call what we did.  Nor will I regret saying this---
I  love you.
I am sorry.
I will always regret that it didn't work.
Always.
Do you think it hurts when you prune or thin plants?  I never thought about that before you, I just know that cutting back makes them stronger, and makes them bloom and fruit better...so that's what I wish you, WP, TC, BFG...Strong and fruitful days ahead of you....
Love,
me.

You lit me up like this.....  :)

OUCH!!!  That HURT, ya'll!!!  But, it felt good and honest, which is what this whole experiment is about.....

There are many people I thought about writing 5 things to....Nicole P-J, Nichole, Aubrey, Connor, Mikey, Kimberly, Nicole L., Helena, Jen-bug, Jason M-W, Fan, Nomers, Chloe, Dahlia, Monique, and forever ANN....so I just wrote off the top of my head.  I hope you guys know that I haven't even BEGUN to tell you  things, and I hope you always want to listen....

xoxo

PS - Just TOTALLY realized I forgot THE most important person on the whole wide world----

Meeeeeeeeeee-owwwwwwwwww.  That's it.

Ahem.  Dear Ryan Gosling:
Dooooooooooooooode...I am chubby, wrinkly, and have TONS of grey hair---how do you NOT have my #???????

30 Day Challenge - Day 11 Being Single

Your Current Relationship-If Single, Discuss
How Single Life Is

Sums it up quite nicely!

So, yeah...I am single.  Clearly.

Being single in your 30s, especially when they are about to become your 40s at any. fucking. second.  is a little tricky.  I am single for a handful of reasons, or so I tell myself.  They are as follows:

1.  I don't trust myself.  After wasting two ENTIRE years of my life in the lamest relationship in the world , I actually don't trust myself, or any judgements I have when it comes to people I might see as "dateable".  I will probably end up being that dirty old lady that lays out by her pool all day in a leopard-print bikini, showing miles of tanned, wrinkly skin, sipping a cocktail at 11am, and copping a feel if the pool boy gets a little too close.  I am okay with that....as long as the pool boy looks like Ryan Gosling.  Or Matt Damon.  Whatever...I'm not that picky.

It would be worth it....

2.  Little Roo.  My daughter has an excellent relationship with her father, so I don't need to be out running around trying to find a 'Baby Daddy'; my little girl has an excellent one, thanyouverymuch.  Also, I have more free time to try to find ways to win arguments with her or get one over on her when I am single.  (That actually takes up a lot of my free time!)

3.  The word 'compromise' is not in my vocabulary.  I am not interested in sharing anything with anyone right now, besides my nutty family. I also have ZERO tolerance for bullshit, which sorta narrows the dating field a teensy bit!

4.     This.
Seriously.  Single because Ryan Gosling.  Totally. Legit.
5.  I sure as hell have no desire to be married.  Again, I totally approve of other people's marriages, and support the decision people make to spend the rest of their lives with each other, but that is really not my thing.  Unless, of course, your name is Ryan Gosling, in which case.....I DO!!  I'm not really sure what I have against that particular institution, but I can't ever see myself voluntarily checking into it again.....drunken weddings in Vegas don't count, right??

If her apron was a bit cooler, this could be me!
So, what is single life like?  Totally awesome, of course!

A) I get to sleep with whomever I want.   Translation:  I wake up with Roo's elbows, feet (urgh!), or hair in my face on a regular basis.
B) I get to do whatever I want.  Translation:  I have tons of free time to do the stuff Roo tells me to do.  Immediately.
 C) I don't worry about trying to impress someone.  Translation:  Haven't shaved my legs in 2 weeks.  Winning!

I actually don't mind being single....I was a serial-dater for about...oh, forever; and then I did the whole crash-and-burn thing with numb-nuts, so a break is a good thing.  Also, I can't imagine bringing any guys that I approve of into Roo's life right now....she has a little too much going on for me to be distracted by trying to be a girlfriend/partner/whatever the hell you call an old lady dating.  So, I have decided it's perfectly ok to do the whole 'random-crushes-on-inappropriate-people', combined with 'friends-with-benefits' until Roo is older, and I am (hopefully) wiser.

I think my life is more interesting when I am single.  I write more, I take better care of myself, and I am definitely a more engaged mom.
I am sure that I will, eventually, start dating again, but until that happens, I will just keep doing what I am doing...being content...being Mom...being Mary.

That's the best I can do right now, and I think it's good enough.

Unless I was doing THIS...which is WAY better than 'good enough'.
 Cheers!

Day 7 - 30 Day Challenge

Your Opinion on Cheating on People

My opinion on cheating on people is that it sucks balls....Seriously.

Couldn't have said it better myself...Now read on as I try.

I don't think people are monogamous by nature, but that is really no excuse for cheating.  If that seems like ill logic, sit down, shut up, and let me explain.

Seriously, I find it silly to say that is natural for people to be monogamous.  I know, I know, swans, and gibbons, and even some species of worms mate for life, so it's totally natural and totally makes sense.  Ummmmm....yeah, whatever.  Look, I respect people who choose to get married, have children, and build a whole life together and forsake all others and keep only unto each other.  I have mad respect for that, and for people who choose to live their lives that way.  My opinion on that matter, though, is that it is a choice, and not necessarily the natural order of things.

However, if you choose to be in a relationship with someone, unless it is a clearly defined open relationship, then you are effectively giving that person the key to your heart, and your zipper; which means you keep that shit locked up, or get out of the relationship.  It's that simple.

This is not rocket science.  It's not even science, I pretty sure it is common fucking sense.  AND good manners.

Have I ever cheated on someone?  Sadly, yes.  Two different boyfriends, actually.  The first time it happened, I was 23, and really just dumb about things in general.  We talked it over, he was heartbroken, and it ruined our relationship.  This relationship wasn't ever going to end up in marriage, and he definitely wasn't the one, but it still sucked.  I ruined our friendship, which was pretty important to me before we dated, and I actually felt a great deal of shame.  Soul-scorching, self-loathing shame.  If you haven't been there (yay! you aren't an a*hole!!  pat yourself on the back!), you can't know, but I am here to tell you it feels really bad.  The look on his face when I told him, and the look on his face during the two or three fights we had in the weeks following was not a look I would ever want to put on anyone's face again.  As I have told ya'll before, I am really good at staying friends with my exes, because I tend to date pretty rad people, and they are usually people I am cool with before the relationship.  Obviously I am not friends with this one anymore, and that is my loss; he is charming, a brilliant artist, and a lot of fun---and a total stranger to me now.
The other person....well, I never told him.  Nor did I feel bad about it.  Not friends, either.  And I am totally okay with all of those things.  Fuck that dude.  Right in the ear.

Universal Truth.

I don't know if I have ever been cheated on....it's possible the Bantam cheated on me (I call him that because he was loud, short, and a total cock....see what I did there?), there is nothing that I would put past him, but I would not even feel the slightest bit of.....well, anything, if 50 chicks came up to me tomorrow and said he cheated on me the whole time we were together.  Wouldn't matter a bit.  I did have one of my all time favorite BFs dump me so he could date someone younger, hotter, thinner, and blonder  than I, and that felt awful.  But, being single meant I had a lot of time to tan, go to the gym, and drink bottle after bottle of Absolut Mandarin vodka instead of consuming food.  30 days later I was super thin, super hot (hard to believe, but I have photos!), and shopping all the time with someone younger, hotter, more buff, and slightly dumber than him---so it all worked out fine.  Post Script, the ex-BF came crawling back after about 5 weeks...proposing and shit!-- but that's a tale for another blog!

I have been the other woman a couple of times as well.....once unknowingly.  I mean, really, am I supposed to ask every hot dude that wants to take me to the mall if he is married??  I mean, clearly, the absence of a ring speaks volumes, right?  Wrong.  Ooops.  My bad.  And, no, I didn't tell his wife or anything like that, I just told him that it would be more gentlemanly to tell people that before they get to the cash register and let them evaluate the sitch and make an informed decision before he whipped out his, er....awwww, shit, these shopping metaphors are getting to me!!  Motherfuckers:  IF you are married and you want to knock boots with someone that you are not married to, don't lie--tell people you are married and let them make their own decision, don't say, "Let's jump in the shower together.  But you go first, cause I gotta call my wife and tell her I won't be home until tomorrow. "  Totally. Not. Cool, man.

The other 2 times I was the other woman....I knew.  But, in my defense

.......................................................................................................................................................................

Actually, there really is no defense for that is there?   I don't really think so.  I could sit here and justify and rationalize, but there isn't any way to do that with any honesty.  It's a shitty thing to do.  My justification was this,

"Well, he is clearly a cheater, but at least I am not going to try to get him to leave his girlfriend.  If he wasn't cheating with me, he would be cheating anyway, and would probably end up with some dumb ho that would text his girlfriend, or stalk him, or follow him home and cause trouble and boil rabbits and shit like that.  Technically, I am doing her a favor, because I am not trying to keep this two-timer."

Can you even believe that shit?  It was really hard to write this, but it's harder for me to picture the people I love, reading about some of the crap I have pulled in the past...
Sums it up nicely....

So, yeah....like I said at the beginning, cheating sucks balls.  And cheaters, well they just suck.

And some of us simply have to live with that.

TOO EFFING DEPRESSING, YA'LL!!!  I cannot end my blog like this; I am all down in the dumps.  So, here are 3 things I am leaving you with so I don't walk away from this totally depressed, and you don't walk away from this wanting to kick my ass:

 1.  I like this.
My thoughts exactly!

2. My brilliant buddy Veronica over at Grown Up Tantrums actually wrote a blog about cheating yesterday, and I thought it was very insightful.  Go check it out!

3.  All that shit I said about people not being monogamous is totally how I feel.  Except when it's this guy:

Call me a gibbon, I would be monogamous as all get out with this one!!
Cheers!

Day 2--30 Day Challenge

How Have You Changed in the Past 2 Years?

Wow.  This one was a doozy, guys.  I tried to write this one about 500 different times today.  I tried to be flippant and joke about my hair and weight and wrinkles, I tried to keep it light and breezy, and I tried to gloss over things, but there is one cardinal rule to great writing (not that I think this will be great, exactly)—and to life in general:

"Tell the truth, tell the truth, tell the truth"
— Sheryl Louise Moller

To really bring light to the changes I have gone through in the past 2 years, and adequately express myself, I need to set the scene….

****Cue Imperial Death March****
2 years ago, I was a couple of months out of a disastrous relationship….I am not a ‘disastrous relationship’ kind of gal, mind you.  I am friends with nearly every person I have ever dated-- and when I say ‘friends’, I mean just that.  As in, ‘I would LOVE to have lunch with you and your new girlfriend/meet your fiancee/babysit your kids on Friday’ kind of friends. Also,  I don’t usually date idiots, mama’s boys, whiners, wieners, schmucks, morons, or douche bags.

Until. I. Did.

Even someone as dumb as this baby would not have dated this dude.

I am not going to give you all the dirty details, you will have plenty of opportunities to judge me as this thing chugs along, so I will summarize:  Every one of my friends thought he was an idiot.  My oldest daughter loathed him.  My baby sister (who is a daughter, best friend, brattiest little sister in the world, antagonist, and partner-in-crime, all rolled into one) got terrible vibes about him and used to beg me to not date him because she was convinced something awful was going to happen.  He wasn’t violent or abusive–just immature, petulant, jealous, mean, petty, and –right at the very end-I think a rampant pill-popper…..  At any rate, one day I listened to him bitch, moan, and whine on the phone, and I thought about what I would do if any of my girls was dating someone like him, and that was it.  I was done.

Just. Like. That.

Unfortunately, he was not.
Literally said this to me in a text.....

What followed was months of stalking…..text messages, email, voice mail, faxes, stuff left at my door step, etc.  I even talked him into moving 2,400 miles away (I am that good, ya’ll, I really am!), and he kept contacting me, walking into my office unannounced when he visited his kids, and in general causing me to be as paranoid as a crack-head at a Policeman’s Ball.

Keeping up?

2 years ago, this is what was going on:  Factor 1:  Psycho ex stalking me.  Factor 2: Guilt over allowing that relationship to drive a wedge between me and the people I loved.  Factor 3: MAJOR self-doubt/self-loathing at allowing the relationship to happen in the first place, much less drag on for 2 years.  Factor 4:  I was fat.  I was eating constantly, partly to cope with stress (yes, yes, I have been known to eat my feelings—and by ‘feelings’, I mean ‘Krispy Kreme’s and pizza’- don’t you judge me.), and partly because I figured that, if I was fat, I would not have to worry about getting in any more relationships, as there are very few men that want to date a little meatball with a brassy red afro.  Factor 5:  I was working in an industry I loved, with a group of people I adored, in a position that I was neither suited for, nor brought me even a shred of satisfaction or joy.  Factor 6:  There may—just may—have been some drinking and smoking going on.  Copiously.  Factor 7: Constant worry about out-of-state family members and their physical and mental declines.

Basically, I was in a place where the only thing that kept me functioning, breathing, and getting out of bed was my Little Roo.  She is truly one of life’s characters, and as resilient as they come.  I spent weeks and months smiling and smiling and smiling and making sure everything about her waking hours was sunshine and lollipops and angels shitting glitter from the sky.  But, I really felt that something was going to have to give, or my brain was going to leak out of my ears while I slept.

Too much has happened in the past 2 years to give details about, but here is a summary:

-Moved to the wilds of Northern CA, back to my hometown.
-Lived on an off-grid farm, grew my own food, played with animals, and hiked in pristine woods with no people around for miles--This was the view from about 30 feet out my front door:

This photo was totally used with Brett's permission and not at all stolen from my sister's FB page!

-Hiked, swam, and played at the Yuba River (GTS, guys, it is AH-MAYZE-ING!)
-Got a job working with the best damn group of people anywhere…ANY. EFFING. WHERE. www.nsjfire.org
-Developed a crush on someone completely inappropriate, and had to see this person constantly and just, like, drool into my coffee mug and try to make coherent sentences on the few occasions I had to talk to him, all the while making sure no one found out. (Gotta tell you, as a major flirt and a sliiiiightly promiscuous hussy *formerly—on both counts*, it was very bizarre and uncomfortable for me to do those things)
-Sat on the roof at night with Lexi and my nephews, underneath a velvet-black sky, just marveling at the stillness, the vastness of the universe, and the sheer number of stars you can see when there are no lights for miles.
-Hung out with a bunch of amazing family members and friends that I hadn’t seen for years.
-Went days and weeks without makeup, hair dye, shaving, watching TV, wearing nice clothes, or fixing my mangled nail polish, and loved it.
This chick is a bit more attractive than me, but you would not BELIEVE what happened when I Googled "dirty hippy chick"  DON'T DO IT!!!!

All in all, I spent 18 months rebuilding fractured family relationships, painting and redecorating the interior of my parents’ house, working on their property, living close to nature, breathing clean air, chilling with goats, dogs, cats, and rabbits (as well as skunks, bears, thieving-ass deer, and birds EVERYWHERE!), meditating, hanging out with Lexi and her crazy friends, making new friends, reconnecting with old friends, and really trying to ‘fix’ my family-- failing spectacularly--but having the time of my life.  Ha.

Mike Tyson said that.  Go figure.

About mid-August, the karma fairies showed up, and apparently I was either Attila the Hun, Pol Pot, Vlad The Impaler, or, like, Bill Cosby or Paris Hilton in a past life, because things went a little sideways, then a little more, then a little more until - quite suddenly – it was imperative that I move back to the PNW...  Immediately.  In that lovely time period, my beloved uncle-- the only brother to my loopy mum and her wild sisters, the only father figure most of my cousins and their kids had for years, and just an all-around decent human being – suddenly died a couple of days before Thanksgiving.  No words to describe how absolutely fucking awful that was and continues to be for my family...

Now, you could make the argument that not much has changed for me from 2 years ago…..Chaos?  Check.  Family turmoil?  Check.  Single?  Check.  Chunky?  Check. (But not as bad as 2 years ago…no Krispy Kreme in NSJ!)  Career up in the air?  WHAT career?!?  The only difference is I know this:

Do I know how I changed in the past 2 years?  Not really.  I do know a couple of things, though, and I am going to share them with  you, because they are the only things that have kept me sane lately, and –because I know them—I know I am going to be just fine 2 years from now, and 2 years after that, and 2 years after that!

1.       There is a reason they tell you to put your oxygen mask on before attempting to help anyone else in a plane emergency--- you can’t help anyone if you can’t breathe.  This is true, I’ve been there repeatedly.

2.      Every chance you get to go out into the trees, into the woods, to the lake, the river, the mountains, etc., DO IT!  Humans, in general, are horrifically disconnected from the natural world, and that is just silly.  Even if you can only go in your back yard and take your shoes off and walk in the dirt and grass for 10 minutes---DO THAT!  Seriously.  You will thank me later.  You're welcome.

3.      Life is all about choices.  Trite, yes?  Truth.  You choose who you allow to drain your energy, you choose to eat pizza instead of a salad, doughnuts instead of fruit and nuts, you choose to take your kids to the mall where the air is dead and lifeless and the lights unnatural, instead of taking them to the park or the woods or to play somewhere in the sunshine.  You choose to read tabloid magazines and compare yourself -unfavorably- to airbrushed photos of people with entire teams devoted to getting that one picture just right.  You choose to focus on what you don’t have instead of being grateful for every damn step you take on your two (probably ugly and gross) feet  (sorry, I don’t mean that your feet are ugly and gross—just all feet.  Including yours.), the roof over your head, and all of the other amazing things in your life.  Make better choices, and you can change your world.

4.      Don’t take yourself so damn seriously.  I am going to give you a little spoiler about my life.  And yours.  We die at the end.  Every. Last. Fucking. One. Of. Us.  What you do between now and then…..that’s all up to you.  Make it amazing.

5.      Ryan Gosling Is super-hot and I was going to put another shirtless picture of him right here, but I decided to leave you with some words of wisdom from my hero, idol, and muse….

Sad But True

So, I’ve been reading Stephen King’s 11/23/63 novel the last few days, and I cannot help feeling personally attacked tonight by it. The book...
